“Jiwa” is a 23m traditional wooden Phinisi, the kind of ship which was used years ago as merchants traded throughout the archipelago. The Phinisi is also the traditional “pirate ship” of the Bugis people, which is where the term “Bogey Man” came from. So, there is quite a bit of history and tradition that surround all the modern amenities of Jiwa. Her twin masts, clean lines and rustic charm truly provide for a unique way of experiencing the Indonesian islands, as she tends to blend into the environment rather than impose on it.

Jiwa was built using the finest Ironwood with full length beams and double keel. Her builder has ensured that as well as looking great Jiwa has been engineered to perform well out at sea. Her 6-cylinder diesel engine pushes her along at a respectable 7.5 knots, and if the winds are right the engines can be turned down and her sails can be set for some classic cruising.

The Boat is split into 3 levels: the top deck has day mattresses, bean bags and low set coffee tables making it nice place to hangout after celebrating a long days surfing. The foredeck has a table and further seating under a large canopy. Towards the stern is our entertainment area with TV/DVD, bar, large dining table and couches down each side. The saloon ensures you can always escape from the sun and that everyone can still find space to spread out in bad weather. Below decks we have the kitchen and supplies, forward of this is a separate A/C sleeping cabin with beds for 8 guests and two full bathrooms.

Assisting Jiwa is a 4.2m Rigid Inflatable Boat with 40hp engine, which provides for fast transfers to & from the surf and for scouting out potential “around the corner” spots. Jiwa’s experienced team of Western guides and Indo crew are always looking to get you the best possible waves with the least (if any) other people on them.

Eugene will be the full time guide for this season ensuring that you get the maximum out of your stay. One of the UK’s top surfers, Eugene has worked as a guide with Sumatran Surfariis before and has extensive knowledge of the regions we’ll be visiting. A solid surfer, chef and all round good guy were looking forward to having Eugene onboard and we’re sure everyone will benefit from his knowledge of the surf, culture and upbeat attitude.

Kwab is one of the owners of Jiwa, and he will be onboard the ship for a number of trips this year assisting Eugene in providing you with an epic adventure. Kwab has been traveling in Indonesia since 1997, joining Scuzz on some early trips on fishing boats and later overland to various parts of the archipelago, including a month-long trip with Scuzz in 1998 to explore the southern regions of Enganno. In 2007 he bought a boat in Kavieng PNG and has spent the last couple of years sailing her through Irian Jaya, Rote, and Bali to the Mentawais. A keen surfer, freediver and explorer, he’s pretty stoked to be back out in the islands, looking for waves and “living the dream”.
