  • Turtle Island, as its name or by any other name is called Venue Island, is a small island located south-west of Adi Island at Kaimana West Papua. Extent of about 2 ½ acres of dominant pine trees and the beach surrounded by white sand. On the island there are keepers of the island which was commissioned by Conservation International Indonesia – Kaimana Program to help protect the turtles and their eggs from the threat of turtle thieves. Before any officer on the island, sea turtles and their eggs stolen every day. But after the officer, turtles can lay eggs safely. According to the island guard, there are at least six species of sea turtles that lay their eggs here. The average sea turtles lay their eggs each night of 6 to 10 turtle with an average number of eggs reaching 180-200 grains.

This is a very interesting tourist attraction, where every night you can watch turtles lay eggs, holding turtles, even sea turtles can lay eggs directly on your palms. Usually the turtles lay their eggs at the time of high tide at night, but under certain conditions, the turtle may lay eggs in the afternoon when it was time to lay eggs, but the possibility is very small, for 2 years only listed 2 times the turtle laying eggs in the afternoon. Turtle eggs will hatch in about 50 days of age, and because the turtles lay their eggs each night, the baby turtles (hatchlings) that have been hatched and ready to go back to the sea takes place every day. Young turtle also returned to the sea at night, usually occurs when darkness fell. Where sea turtles lay their eggs usually marked and numbered by CII’s officer. They recorded it so well that they also know the schedule and ready to hatch turtles returned to their habitat in the ocean. The interesting thing also is that you will be given the opportunity to release hundreds of baby turtles into the sea at night. Another interesting point in Turtle Island is a saltwater lake that resembles a lake, and in some parts there are heaps of salt water foam like snow. You can also watch the sunset which is unequaled in this lake. In this island also live bats,  pheasant, and several other coastal bird species. If you love diving, so many interesting spots in this area you can enjoy. But if you are not a diver, you just  fishing and we guarantee you will not be disappointed.  You could be fishing and cook your own as much as you like in this island.

However, because the island including wildlife areas, to get there there are some rules we must obey in order not to interfere with breeding animals. After arriving at Turtle Island, conservation officer at the site will immediately tell you about the rules and procedures tour the island.

Kaimana Regency has some of world’s most beautiful and diverse tropical reefs, and is also one of the few places in the world to see ancient rock art. A rich repository of birds, rare, animals, reptils, amphibians, butterflies, and plants, Kaimana terrestrial environment ranges from lush tropical rainforests nourished by cascading rivers and waterfalls to 2000 meter-tall mist-covered bluffs. Here are a few Suggestion for discovering Kaimana’s myriad adventures. Get your art fix near Namatota Island. The most impressive display of millenia-old rock art is located on the mainland east of Namatota. Early visitors to West Papua created the art when it was still possible to walk from Australia’s Torres Strait to the Island of New Guinea across what is now the shallow Arafura Sea. Etnologists belive that wandering the Aborigines created the painting before they moved to Papua’s highlands. Local legend, however, relates that spirits painted the intricate design. After viewing this magnificent display of primitive art, most visitors also belive that spirits might still haunt this place. The extensive array is seen easily while cruising between Namatota island and the mainland. This area must be accessed from the south. As you travel north the art is found on the right, west facing mainland cliffs. Stay as close as possible to the mainland side of the channel, and you will see the paintings about midway up the strait. Book a liveboard diving trip to explore the underwater realm of Triton Bay to see wonderous marine life ranging from the world’s amallest seahorse to whale shark, the largest fish on the planet. Explore the waterfalls that abound around Kaimana. Perhaps the most impressive and picturesque waterfall is in the Momon area near mouth of Sanggala Bay. Depending on the flow, you can approach quite closely and even venture upstream. Delve into the region’s history, Remnants of Kaimana’s Dutch colonial period can be seen in Lobo Village. In Sanggala Bay, there is a World War II anti-craft instalation. One of the guns is reportedly in decent enough condition and in a good position to be photographed. Visit the newly protected turtle nesting beaches on Pulau Venu, where turtle tracks far outnumber human footprints. Around sunset at Pulau Venu, you may observe thousands of bats take flight for their nighttime feeding ritual. Wander Kaimana Regency’s unspoiled beaches, especially at sunset, Kaimana city is known as “Kota Senja”, or “Sunset City”. Hike to the spectacular Triton Lakes, or perhaps to the unforgettable waterfalls on the Papisol-Kumawa Peninsula, and look carefully for Tree Kangaroos hiding in the forest. Gaze in awe as exotic birds fill the jungle sky, Hornbills and Birsd of Paradise are just two examples of Kaimana’s wealth of birdlife. Vilage hop and be welcomed with a dizzying variety of ethnics dances. Learn about the traditional method of sustainable marine file conservation, Sasi or Nggama, while visiting Kaimana’s villages.

Two years ago, there was a tourist boat from Sorong arriving at Kampung Lakahia in Etna Bay, Kaimana district, Papua, and asked the local community to be a guide to some foreign guests on board for fishing around the Gulf of Etna. Accompanied by two local guides, they then went to the River Urama and Mairuma. In these rivers, they managed to get fish Baramuli (white snapper), black snapper (Papuan Bass). The next day they were fishing around the estuary of the river again Urama and gained a lot of white snapper, black snapper, bubara (GT), and several other fish species. The story of the fishing was then published in one French-language magazine in Paris. This publication is then pulled one of his fishing tours activist who is also a member of the International Fishing Club Frenchman to try to find other fishing spots in rivers and lakes in Kaimana. Through browsing the Internet, she found my contact number and we then communicate. Finally he decided to come to Kaimana, but because of busy elsewhere, the new plan was implemented in late November 2011. Mr. Leo came with took a beginner angler who is also the French and also a chef from Manado. He then uses the motor boat – ketinting – to travel to the Gulf of Etna. The results are encouraging, in the Gulf of Etna they managed to meet a local guide who come fishing with guests yacht two years ago. For four days they were fishing on the River Urama and Mairuma also two river estuaries. The results are encouraging, they get a lot of fish, even a friend Leo, who just a beginer also get a lot of fish, they are satisfied and promised to bring other guests to fishing here. Leo told me, spot of fishing at Etna Bay can be used as an international fishing spot for foreign guests. According to him, this spot is very precise and unique, guests can fishing in the river while enjoying views of the river, enjoying the birds, even the animals in the river. From the explanation, I found out that the trend of tour of fishing and fishing sport in the world has now changed from fishing in the sea with the monotony view of high seas to fishing in the rivers and lakes that have a bonus of stunning views. Leo proposed that the river is prefer conserved in order to fish birds and animals in the river so it would be more numerous and tame. He also intends to build a lodge in the vicinity of the river and invite the community to participate in the tourism business. Therefore, people around the object should be made to understand in order to accept the alternative environmentally friendly businesses. The Kaimana Tourism Office welcomes this opportunity and at the beginning of the year 2012 will be to disseminate tourism awareness to communities around the object. Good luck **
