Biak Island is located in the northern part of Papua province, Indonesia, and is the largest island among the so-called “Schouten Islands” group. Its soil is mostly consist of coral rocks with some fertile land at the western and northern parts. “Schouten islands” group consist of approximately 50 islands. On the eastern part of Biak we have the Padaido islands group with its blue and clean sea, beautiful white beaches and coral reefs. On the Western part we have Supiori island with its beautiful mountains and clean rivers; Befondi island with its golden sea birds and abundance of fishes and could be a heaven for fisihing hobbiers; and Numfor island (the third biggest island) with its beautiful beaches, deadly poisonous snakes but friendly people. On the northern part we have the Mapia islands, separated from Biak around 60 miles, lonely on the Pacific Ocean, full with sea birds and a heaven for people who knows ‘the art of doing nothing.” According to le Roux (1959) the island Biak measures approximately 2,500 km2 and is separated from neighboring island Supiori by a small strait. Supiori measures 434 km2 (the second biggest island) while Numfor 324 km2 (the third biggest island). Eastern Indonesia has some of the highest marine diversity in the world. The Padaido Islands, Irian Jaya are the site of some of the world’s most intact and biologically diverse coral reef systems, harboring 95 coral species and 155 fish species, and other marine resources which offer both non-cash and commercial value to the area’s inhabitants. Many of the coral reefs found in and around the Padaido Islands near Biak, however, are threatened by unsustainable levels of resource exploitation and destructive fishing techniques including especially the use of cyanide and explosives. The Padaido Islands, Irian Jaya are the site of some of the world’s most intact and biologically diverse coral reef systems. The reefs harbor 95 coral species, 155 fish species, and other marine resources which provide both food and income to the people who live there. Destructive fishing practices employ explosives and cyanide to make it easier to scoop up dwindling fish stocks. These unsustainable activities are crumbling the reef ecosystems and threatening the future of coastal communities. Padaido Islands is a group of islands consists of 31 islands, 10 of them uninhabited. Divided into 2 parts, Padaido Upper and lower Padaido has white sand with amazing panoramic sea. Destructive fishing practices employ explosives and cyanide to make it easier to scoop up dwindling fish stocks. These unsustainable activities are crumbling the reef ecosystems and threatening the future of coastal communities. Farelli was the pseudonym of a remarkable man who was infused with an obsessive desire to create things that did not yet exist. Born in the Netherlands in 1940 Dolf Versteegh left his home country in 1990 in order to start a new life on the Island of Bali. Without any formal education he reinvented himself as an architect, as a designer of furniture, as a sculptor and as a writer.
As a teenager Dolf spent only three years in High School but he kept studying history and the natural world all his life and during his last 25 years on Bali he revealed himself not only as versatile artist but also as a formidable scholar of biology.
Farelli was a prolific creator of web content and what he has left behind will remain standing as a great monument to his creative spirit, his ingenuity and his never-ending search for knowledge.
