These lakes form one lake-complex with Danau Sidenreng. Danau Tempe is a large lake with villages around it. Almost all forestaround this lake has been cleared, except the swampy forest between Tempe and Sidenreng. Danau Tempe covers 6,000 ha. Both lakes are shallow (maximum depth about 5m) and support abudant floating vegetation. Large numbers of ducks and herons occur around the mats of floating vegetation. The Tempe lake has many fish species of any lake in Sulawesi. It is an outstanding example of a shallow eutrophic lake ecosystem. Principal vegetation: Floating lake vegetation. Ceratophyllum dermisium, Pistia stratiotes, Ipomoea aquatica, Polygonium sp., Cyperus platystylis, Echinochloa crusgelii. Lake Tempe is the lowest in the Sindenreng-Tempe chain of lakes. During rainy season its area is about 30,000 ha, but it shrinks to mere 1,000 ha during the dry season, during which time its dry shore area is used for agriculture. Its economic value is great both because of agriculture and fishery. The lake can not be considered, even during the high-water season, as a real lake, since the through-flow water velocity is quite high. The stratification of the lake is naturally weak (RTR 3.5). Transparency was 0.6 metres. Lake Tempe is a fertile and productive water body with total nitrogen values from 0.72-1.01 mg/l N and total phosporous concentration from 0.05-0.06 mg/l P, in which high allochthonous organic matter concentration support a large and uniform fishery. The lake is important for fishery and migrating birds. The fish yield is 650 kg/ha/year. From the limnological point of view, the lake is much affected by the allochthnous transport of organic matter and nutrients, and thus by the drainage area.
Based on the jurisdiction status that the Lake Tempe System under management of three regencies, namely Wajo, Sidrap and Soppeng Regency with border are: – Northern: to border on Belawa and Transitolo District. – Eastern : to border on Tempe and Sabangparu District. – Western : to border on Sengkang town (teh capital of Wajo regency). – Southern: to border on Tokare village.
