Ceremonial Cloth Kota Bumi district, South Sumatra, Abung people, 19th century
Description: A rare type of embroidered textile. The few other known examples (see Maxwell, “Textiles of Southeast Asia”, page 202) are all in this square four-directional format. They have the appearance of a mandala and it is certainly possible that this format has survived since Buddhism came to Sumatra in the 4th century. The placement of an eight-petaled lotus flower in the center also speaks to this connection. Trees grow from each corner and an elephant stands as guardian on either side. The shiny silk floss embroidery appears to float on the surface of the deep indigo ground, both emphasizing the tactile qualities of the other. Technique: Silk floss embroidery on indigo dyed cotton ground
Dimensions: 19″ x 19″ ( .48 x .48 m ), hard-mounted (TG)

Pelangi shoulder or head cloth, Palembang, South Sumatra, early 20th century, tied dye resist patterning on silk. The composition and patterning technique of pelangi (“rainbow”) textiles such as this one clearly reflects influence of Indian textile traditions in Palembang. The city has been an important centre for maritime trade for over a millenium, and has absorbed a variety of influences from many cultures (East Asia, Mainland Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Arab world and Europe). The image at left shows an 18th century depiction of women’s dress, and a view near Palembang (MT)

Ceremonial garment, Sumatra, Indonesia, 18th cent.
Technique: Silk silk floss embroidery, mica and flat metal strips on cotton ground.

Tampan (IK)

The following description of the tampan ritual cloth is taken from the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History Collection.
Please see their website for the full text with references.

“A ‘tampan’ is a textile measuring between 15 and 30 inches square, backstrap loom woven from locally produced coarse undyed cotton, decorated with supplementary weft threads interwoven to produce the design elements.
“Tampan are found not only on the South Coast but also in the mountain region of Liwa-Sukau and Kenali on the Krui Coast, and among the Kauer, the Serawai, the Redjang, and possibly among the Abung. According to Entwhistle, production generally ceased by about 1900 but probably continued on a limited scale during the first two decades of the 20th Century. Gittinger generally concurs that production ceased in the first quarter of the 20th Century. Tampan may be used by all levels of society and functioned primarily as wrappers for gifts given by the family of the bridegroom at weddings…
“Tampan also wrapped other gifts exchanged during the marriage negotiations. They also functioned in the wedding ceremony, in the ceremony marking the return of the bride to her home accompanied by her husband, in Ngelama at a ceremony during which a newborn child is carried to the maternal grandparents’ home, in circumcision rites, and in funeral ceremonies as well as other minor uses…” – UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History Collection

Woman’s shoulder or hip cloth, Pasemah highlands, Bengkulu Province, Sumatra, mid-20th century or earlier, weft ikat patterning on cotton and other fibers, natural dyes.
Pasemah is a mysterious place, rarely visited by travellers, and not easily accessible. Many strange creatures, cultures and plants can be found there, including the Rafflesia arnoldii, a gargantuan flower that smells like rotting flesh. At left is a 1930s photograph of one about to bloom in the Pasemah highlands. The textile is almost as strange as the flower; the ikat patterns are simple, yet they resolve into complex coincidental patterns. (MT)

Shouldercloth, Pasemah highlands, Bengkulu Province, Sumatra, 19th century, weft ikat patterning and gold supplementary weft on cotton and other fibers, natural dyes.
At left is an early 19th century illustration of the landscape of the Pasemah region, as recalled by a British expedition to the interior. Wild. The culture and the landscape of the Pasemah highlands to this day are little known and seldom studied. The inset photograph from the 1930s shows Pasemah dancers; a poignant illustration of the archaic nature of the cultures of the Bengkulu interior (MT)

Pasemah Songket Runner (TP)

This finely woven silk and fine cotton textile from Pasemah, in central Sumatera, was probably used as a shouldercloth or headwrap, tho no fold lines are in evidence. It consists of a field of red and black plaid bordered by two identical ends with songket bands and rosettes (the metal has worn off most of the threads). The ends are beautifully finished with fine silk edging and small knots made from warp threads. This piece has a few small holes, one tear (see damage) and a few spots, but is in otherwise excellent condition. Pasemah textiles were little known until the last decade or so, but are now prized by collectors. First third 20thc. Size: 80″x30″
