Naitimu_tone

In the middle

Present Raja:  H.H. Raja Vincentius R. Manek of Naitimu

Naitimu is in the middle of the island of Timor.

Timor is known as an island where the traditional social systems are one of the best preserved of Indonesia.
The middle part of Timor is known as the most traditional of the total island and of this area the north part of this area   (known as the Belu area) is the more traditional than the part of Belu.
One of the principalities there is the principality of Naitimu. Now lying in the sub-district, or kecamatan of Nanaet Dubesi.
In 2000, when the chances changed for the Indonesian dynasties to really come back in the social system, also in Belu plans were made for the official selection and installation of the several rajas of the area.

Waihale, Liurai Luis-Seneka Tei Serang

Waihale, Liurai Luis-Seneka Tei Serang

Before theWaihale, Liurai Luis-Seneka Tei Serang, timur first Portuguese arrived in the sixteenth century, Belu lay at the heart of one of the most influential kingdoms on Timor, Waihale. But as the Bunak had to make way for the Belunese, so the Belunese were in turn to yield to a new intruder.

Already in the 1940-ies he was ruling,so he was one of the last real rulers from the old time, who still was alive in the 21th century(together with the Sushunan of Surakarta).
Because the paramount ruler of the whole of Timor(at least in the 20th century as symbol/in name):the Maromak Oan became in the 1920-ies Roman Catholic, this real way of rule ceased to exist, because the old ruling system had to much to do with the old religion.
So the ruler on the picture could call himself:Liurai of Malakka.Malakka was the old name for S.-Belu.Belu was the more or less direct ruling area of the Maromak Oan.Malakka also because it is said, that the ruling dynasty of this area must have come from Malaysia/Malakka.
When Liurai Luis /Louis SEnaka Teeseran(Tei Serang) of Malakka died 11-5-2003 his rival for years(since 1989; chief of the traditional council)) ;Dominikus Tei Seran(from another branch)installed himself 9-8-2003.There are 2 other pretenders for the dignity. No official decission has been made until now.

This Liurai had his rival in Dominikus Tei Searn in Laran. Both are attached to 2 also rival Emperors of the whole of Timor(theoretically),but in fact nowadays only of Belu-area(Waiwiku Waihale):the Maromak Oans;respectively:A(u)gustinus Nahah Seran and the also in Laran living Agustin Klau(the uncle of his wife). The Maromak Oan title ceased to exist after the abdication of the last Emperor/Maromak Oan Hendrikus Nahak Seran. He was Maromak Oan 1925-1930.But also had become Roman Catholic and in that time the explanation of that function(semi-relgious dignity)didn’t well go together with the Christian Roman Catholic religion. The last Emperor died in 197..

Noimutti, Raja Don Antonius da Costa

Noimutti, Raja Don Antonius da Costa

The statelett of NoRaja Don Antonius da Costa of Noimuttiimuti is actually a rather strange area that is not well populated,it is in the South East of Miomaffo, which is in North Middle Timor (itself lying in the south of this district).

Originally it was a part of Portuguese Timor and before it was said by the Portugese and the dynasty of the Portugese, an enclave of OECusse Ambeno, that it was connected by a corridor with the latter.(This was denied by Holland and the local W.-Timorese raja and chiefs.)

When Portugal changed the last parts of their realm in present day Indonesia (and kept OEcusse Ambeno enclave), Noimuti became a part of Miomaffo. In 7-8-1916, it became part of Dutch Timor, effective 7-8-1916 and the area choose to become part of Miomaffo principality 25-4-1917.

Before that the old raja from Portuguese time; Raja Don Domingus IV da Costa (1890’s until 1915) was as ruler already replaced by the Vice-Raja Fettor Koko Salem, because the sympathy of the old Raja laid to much with the Portuguese.

In the beginning, Noimuti was not a proper principality at all. It was in fact, half an area of Amanuban and half of Miomaffo that was given to the Roman Catholic Church. There, they made a sort of representative church area (a sort of a branch of the Vatican of Timor, which was at another place).

People from the surrounding areas settled there, but controlled by the local church officials.

Before 1800, a certain Prince Richardus, or Ricardus Sonbai had to flee.He was the son of Liurai Neno Sonbai alias Dom Pedro of Sonbai (Besar) and brother of the Liurai Bau. Leu Sonbai alias Alfonso Salema (ruled before 1749-1752).

He fled with his mother, Princess Petronella da Costa of OEcusse Ambeno to the east. There the people accepted him in Noimuti, where he settled, as their Raja. Some say he was also accepted as a symbolic Raja in OEcusse and maybe elsewhere too.

He also married a princess of OEcusse Ambeno. He died around 1800.They also called him Raja of OEnam which is also a name for Sonbai Empire.

Raja Dom Matheus da Costa;brother of Liurai D. Domingos III da Costa, became Raja of Noimuti. His brother ruled around 1879-1896.He had a Tongkat (Symbol of Authority) given by Portugal before 1900, which was from period of Queen Maria da Gloria of Portugal (1826-’53).

He abdicated and was succeeded by Raja D IV. After this the Raja stopped as effective ruler, he became chief in the church. The Fettor family ruled until 1940, but were not always good rulers.

From 1940-1953, the Raja dynasty was again in the limelight. Matheus V, was the effective ruler and in WW II even had more responsibilities. After WW II the Dutch came back, the Salem family became rulers of Noimuti. But, the Raja dynasty had regained some influence. Nominal Fettor (Raja for the dynasty itself) was from about 1953, Don Michael, the brother of Matheus V. Raja Don Antonius is son of Matheus V. Because the rulers are descended from a Dutch colonial official Jan de Hornay, who made his dynasty in OEcusse Ambeno, in this Raja there is also some Dutch blood. Some people tend to say, that Noimuti is now ruled by the Salem family.

The directly and originally the rule was (direct rule) divided between the families of da Costa: Noilnakan, Salem:Nolkain. Officially, the da Costa’s here are the representatives of the deceased Raja Richard Sonbai.

The present Crown Prince of Noimuti is Raja Muda Francisco da Costa, a highly educated engineer. In his younger years, the Raja was working in the Indonesian army.

Mollo, Raja Edison E.R. Oematan

Mollo, Raja Edison E.R. Oematan

Raja Edison is the 2ndRaja Edison E.R. Oematan ,Mollo son of the previous raja and grandson of a famous raja of Mollo: Raja Willem Frederik Hendrik OEmatan(1915-1930), who named himself later after several princes of the Dutch royal family.

He is one of the few kings of Timor, who has been installed officially (12-8-2001), 4 years after the death of his father.

His mother is a noblewoman from the sub-statelett of Tefnai in Fatuleu and his grandmother a honest Christian princess of the Manubulu dynasty of the Rotinese principality of Korbafo (Roti lies to the west of Timor). He also has Chinese blood in his veins.

The Raja is actively involved in agriculture. One time you can see him as a farmer; overlooking the agricultural business in his area and on his private land, the other time he is the real King of Mollo with all types of royal culture around this interesting Usif.

He has one of the finest historical photo collections of West Timor and lives in the old palace of his grandfather in Ajaubaki and has the ability to mobilise his people in a very short time his people for things that must be done.

Like most of the rajas of West Timor, he has a very soft-hearted character.

The Raja is more or less married in a traditional way with a noblewoman from S. Amanatun: Ratu Ronni M. Nokus. His Crown Prince is his oldest son Raja Muda Donald E.T. OEmatan.

He is known as a Raja, who is very helpful to all people who seek his help.

Miomaffo (or Amakono), Raja Alfons Kono

Miomaffo (or Amakono), Raja Alfons Kono

The Raja whoRaja Alfons Kono, Miomaffo , Amakonose principality was very important before, has always been active in politics the last decades.

He studied in Java and worked there for a while, where he met his part Dutch wife (a part member of a regent dynasty in East-Java).

He functions more as a local politician, then as a Raja, so you hardly see him in traditional Raja clothes during important traditional events.

This very kind raja is one of the best educated Rajas of West Timor and President of the Reformis Party.

Lino, Usif Leopold Nicolaas Isu Nisnoni & Ratu Frederika Nisnoni

Lino, Usif Leopold Nicolaas Isu Nisnoni & Ratu Frederika Nisnoni

The Nisnoni dynaLino, Usif Leopold Nicolaas Isu Nisnoni & Ratu Frederika Nisnonisty ruled from 1776 over the Kupang area lying in the principality of Sonbai Kecil.

Before this area was under the Rajas of the Helong people of Kupang area, but later they gave areas to the Foenay, TaEbenu, Amabi and Amarasi people, who came from the inland. Also a branch of the imperial dynasty of Sonbai received some land.

Because of f.i. problems in the Sonbai dynasty and a need for them to have a good representative in the Kupang area, where the Dutch were, there came a separate Sonbai principality here.

Before, Timor was one empire under the semi-divine Maromak Oan (based in Belu/middle Timor), who gave the sub-emperor ship over the west of west-Timor to his brother . He later made himself more independent of the paramount-Emperor.

The Sonbai dynasty became extinct at least once, so again a close family member of the Emperor of Timor was given to Sonbai to rule as sub-emperor. So the present Raja of Kupang is directly descended of the Paramount-Emperor of the whole of Timor.

The present Raja was sent to Holland in 1948 to get a good education, which was fit for the modern, more political difficult and exacting time.

He came back to Indonesia in 1956, where he tried to finish his high school in Bandung. Difficult because of the warlike atmosphere in Indonesia then (he was on a Dutch school and the New-Guinea crisis was then played high).

Back on Timor in 1958 he had some difficulty among the members of the dynasty, who saw him as too much influenced by the Dutch mind .The Dutch were then the enemy because of the New.-Guinea crisis.

After some difficulties with building up his career he could start as government official. He did that so well, that all his children could follow higher studies. And also he could begin to build on the spot ,where always the palaces of his forefathers in Bakunase had built a modern Sonaf (palace),the Sonaf KotaE Bakunase.

Now he is already pensioned but still active. When the Rajas and Sultans in Indonesia were reintroduced in the social and political system since 1999, he was also asked to become a major politician locally: chief of the local section of the Christian-Democratic party. Because of his busy life he only accepted the vice-presidency of the local section of the party.

He is however more in the charity things and so also put down that function after some years.

Because of his good international contacts with institutes and scholars he was also asked to set up a studygroup to try to reconcile the traditional Timorese-area view of the rights to the Timor sea natural resources and the like and the international accepted Australian(East-Timorese )view over it.

Like his father Raja Alfons Nisnoni (died 1992) he is a genuine nationalistic King, who stands in a not fanatic way for the right s of Indonesia to land-and sea resources. He always expressed his wish to reach that goal(also the contact with the brother-people of East-Timor)in a non-fanatic way.

Up until now he isn’t installed officially as King of Kupang (the title Liurai of Sonbai Kecil was bestowed automatically on him after the death of his father in 1992) for two reasons. First :the Kingdom of Kupang is a federation like f.i. Negri Sembilan in Malaysia.

The Nisnoni dynasty is th矰erson to be elected as King, but it isn’t automatically. Expected automatically, but not elected automatically. When the Liurai Leopold Isu Nisnoni will be elected as King/Usif Pah of Kupang, that also means a big official installation, where all the other Rajas of W.-Timor and surrounding islands had to be invited.(For Timor the Rajas and Fettors of TaEbenu, Foenay, Helong, Kupang, Amarasi, Insana, Amfoang, Malakka, Lamaknen, Beboki, Miomaffo, Amanuban, Amanatun, Mollo, Fatu Leu, Amabi and not to forget the many Rajas in the Belu -area). Not forgetting all the government officials. Because of the land reformation, much of the traditional income has been vanished for the Nisnoni-dynasty, so that such an installation had to be calculated well.

Nowadays the candidate-King of Kupang is called just Usif, which means Lord and is here used for a King without a traditional and official installation. Maybe it will be done in 2006.

In Indonesia media he is now already called the Raja of Kupang. The old Rajas of Kupang (Helong) withdrew after 1613 more and more to the island of Semau. Before 1749 they were already permanently on that island.

The Raja of Kupang tries with a lot of energy to drag his province into the international world.
In 2001 he was for 3 months in Holland and made there f.i. contact with Dutch TV, who decided to make a film about him in a series about present day kings of Indonesia. This particular film about this Timor King was so popular in Holland, that the TV network decided to make a 2nd series about the Kings of Indonesia.

In 2002 the Raja of Kupang was also the first Christian King, who attended (with his Queen Frederika) the bi-annual National Indonesian Royal Festival (Festival Keraton Nusantara III in Tenggarong/Kutai Kartanegara), which was before a merely Islamic happening.

Because of his international University contacts he also could play a role in bringing Kings into contact with scholars.

In 2004 he was back at the Festival Keraton Nusantara IV in Yogyakaarta with his Queen Frederika, his son Prince Don Carlos Nisnoni (an architect) and his family, the Fettor-Raja Gideon Amabi of Amabi and his Ratu, members of the Royal Court of Kupang, members of the Royal dynasty of Fatu Leu, members of the Princely dynasty of TalaE (Saudale-dynasty/Rote)and a cultural province group to attend.

In 2006 he will attend FKN V in Surakarta with a larger Royal Timor delegation. Much of the W.-Timor Kings wanted to attend as well, but in that year they were into the political process of returning into local politics and that cost much money, so they preferred that. Also royalty from Rote, etc. will attend.

He is the only Timor King , who can speak Dutch fluently, so that is very important in the study of the old Dutch historical documents about the area. He was asked many times by the local government and archive to advise and translate in historical projects.

Nowadays he is also vice-chairman of the West-Timorese council of Kings. The chief of this Dewan Usif2 Timor is the Raja of Insana.

Because of being the only West-Timor King, who can speak fluently Dutch, English and French, his many contact with traditional chiefs, kings and people he is much asked by international scholars to accompany them during their researches in the Timor-Flores area(province of Nusa Tenggara Timur).

That local contacts he could make during his time as government official, during which time he made contacts with much local royalty, who were functioning then as government officials in the provincial government centre.

In 2004 the publishing company Andrew Tani Co. in Jakarta made for the first time in history (order of Company Sidomuncul) a book about (semi-photobook) the Indonesian Kings of Indonesia from East to West. The principality of Kupang was the only Christian monarchy (again) in that book. (Indonesia:Land of a thousand kings/Indonesia:negeri seribu Raja).

Nowadays the King is merely;besides his fanatic(typical Indonesian)hobby tennis; occupied in charitable projects: helping the poor and needed. Building up and trying to fund new churches, etc.

He is the patron of the organisation, who wants to help talented ,but poor children with their education and to help active ,but poor housewives in their lives (Yayasan Yasap).

The King sees all human beings as creatures of God;no matter their religion. When in end 1990’s there were some clashes between local people and Muslims, the King and other Kings ,traditional chiefs and church officials decided to protect the Muslims against this agony.

The mother of the King is a daughter of the most important Raja of the island of nearby Rote:Manek/Raja Johannis J.M. Amalo.

The present Queen of Kupang; Ratu Frederika Nisnoni-Lino,also descended of one of the Maneks of Termanu. The Queen tries to uphold; like the Queen-mother of nearby Amarasi; the very beautiful weaving traditions of the area in her weaving-cooperative.

All his children have studied and having good jobs: Crownprince Don Alfonsus is working in the office of a cement-factory, youngest son Don Carlos is an architect, middle daughter Donna Esther is a small scale businesswoman, oldest daughter Donna Connie has a high bank job in Jakarta, youngest daughter Donna Adeleida is a high bank official in Kupang.

Like a true Christian the King of Kupang keeps on sacrificing a part of his life for the well-being of the people, preservation of local culture and promoting the local area internationally. Or:helping anyone ,who needs help.

In him you can see the true spirit of how God wants to see a King: the first servant of his people.
In that he is a good promoter of the good aspects of (traditional) monarchy in modern time.

Kupang, Don Leopold Nicolaas Isu Nisnoni

Kupang, Don Leopold Nicolaas Isu Nisnoni

Don Leopold Nicolaas Isu Nisnoni, timor, tiomur, dynasty

Kupang
The Head of the Kupang dynasty is Raja Don Leopold Nicolaas Isu Nisnoni, The Raja of Kupang.
He was elected and is accepted as the Raja of Kupang.
The current Raja of Kupang succeeded as Head of the Royal House of Kupang, 14th November 1992.
The current RDon Leopold Nicolaas Isu Nisnoni, timor, tiomur, dynastyaja of Kupang is the Vice Chairman of the Council of Timorese Rajas (Dewan Usif Timor).
The Nisnoni Rajas and Liurais descent from the oldest eligible son of a Sonbai (sub) Emperor, but they had to go to the area, where there are now and stayed on, accepting their situation.
Don Leopold Nicolaas Isu Nisnoni with Ratu Fredrika .
This monarch lives in the cosmopolitan city of Kupang. Because of the high population of people from all parts of the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur there, the overall support for him isn’t comparatively large.Of course to those of the people, who belongs to Sonbai Kecil and also to a lesser extend to the Federated Kingdom of Kupang support him as monarch,or heir to the Royal title.
The present Usif (Lord) of Kupang did not inherit the title Raja of Kupang after the death of his father, but the title and position: Liurai of Sonbai Kecil. Gradually, and eventually, he was accepted as by the member monarchs of the Federal Kupang Royalty as the King and the same by the nobility of the area and the people. It is a case of him earning the respect and then the title with position. As of present, he had not been installed officially.

He received a part of the forming of his character in Holland. Some said because of that, that was to be western minded, but later it proved to be, that he still knows, how to communicate as a father with his people.
The contact with the country, where he lived from his 12th until his 20th year is kept by him by listening to the world wide broadcasted programmes of the Holland radio broadcast organization (Radio Wereld Omroep Nederland). This is a common thing, that many, many more Indonesians are doing, who had their education in Indonesia, or in Holland with Dutch school systems.

The Raja likes Jazz music very much. What since the 1950’s is rock and roll for a part of the youth, that is jazz for the generation before WW II and shortly thereafter.

Until the beginning of the 1990’s he wasn’t very active as future King of Kupang, but after the death of his father Raja Alfonsus in 1993 that changed the situation. He was then thinking to give the dignity to one of his brothers, but the family refused to accpet that idea, because in the Nisnoni dynasty the right of the oldest son (in modern times; before a brother of the deceased also could become king) to become the new king is sacred.
Because of all kinds of circumstances he met many West-European persons, also scholars from USA, Australia and the like, he could come in the network of Indonesian royalty and because of that he grew more and more in his new dignity as chief of the Raja Dynasty of Kupang.
In 2001 he was invited to come to Holland for 3 months to do some promotional work for his province. That resulted in the Raja coming in the contact with Dutch national TV, who later made in 2002 a film about the live of the king. That was received very well in Holland.
Charity work is more, what he likes, than politics and feelings of fame. He is one of the monarchs of Indonesia, who first wants to do something for his people as the 1st servant and then think about his own royal installation (which still has to take place).

The Raja is a no-nonsense royal, who has a very sweet character, hates violence (and also tries to spread that to all kind of political networks),is a person who can be trusted always, sacrifices his time always for others (sometimes a bit to much),adored by his near family, never hurts anybody, is a moderate Christian, but a honest one.

Don Leopold Nicolaas Isu Nisnoni, timor, tiomur, dynastyThe heir of the Raja is Raja Muda ( Crown Prince ) Don Alfonso Nisnoni, who will inherit the position of both leadership and responsibility. The Crown Prince married late at the age of 39 and has inherited his father’s soft and friendly character. The Raja Perempuan Muda ( Crown Princess ) was previously called Princess Maria Rade Pono of Seba ( on the nearby island of Savu ). They have now one son called Prince Leopold.
Don Alfonso Nisnoni
The Raja Muda of Kupang

The Raja as always supported by his wife, who is not only the Queen of Kupang, but also the Queen of her royal kitchen. The food, that comes out of her royal kitchen (made with her advise and her help (she likes cooking) gives a slight feeling of supreme well being.

The Raja lives in a modern house; built on the old hill, where the residences of his forefathers were once standing.

This King gives you the feeling, that all people are human beings, but God above has given some people that little bit extra so to serve as good kings of their people.
