Probably my most vividSumba, Rende, Rambu Juliana memory from this year was from Sumba.

In November we attended the funeral ceremony of the late Queen of Rindi, Tamu Rambu Yuliana. We shot thirteen hours of digital video footage which I am working through to create edits for their archive and our use at the Threads of Life gallery.

William, Lolet, Pung and I were invited to document the event by Yuliana’s heirs, Tamu Rambu Hamu Eti and Umbu Kanabu Ndaung, who produce exquisite Sumbanese weavings for Threads of Life.

In contrast to Yuliana’s very secretive court, Umbu and Rambu Eti wish to create a more open society capable of maintaining the traditional culture within a modern context.

They are faced with a very interesting challenge and are eager to connect with other communities facing similar obstacles.

We at Threads of Life are excited to be a part of facilitating such inter-island dialogue.

Talae, Fettor Ekrest Saudale

Talae, Fettor Ekrest Saudale

Ekrest Saudale is only a temporary-chief ruling dynasty after death of older brother. Talae, Fettor Ekrest Saudale

Like much Saudale’s od this hard working dynasty he is living outside. But this year he will come back.

The actual eligible person to monarch title is the young and on Java living Raja Muda Roy Saudale, whose wife Frederika Saudale-Raharsi was the first Rote royal (with sister of her husband Lucy Theuer-Saudale from Switzerland) to attend the national Indonesian Royal Festival (september 2004 Yogyakarta).

Another royal from this dynasty ;the colonial official Jakob Saudale (working in Kefamenanu/North Central Timor) was with very big bravery acting continuously against the Japanese occupation. An example for much free souls now and then.

So here you can see,how royals from a relative little principality can act in life as very great persons. Thanks to God.

Chief DynastybRote, Prince-Christoffel-Hanok, Lengguranch of OEnale Prince Christoffel Hanok Lenggu.
His brother was the last raja of OEnale until his death in 1961.
Actually the Lenggu’s from Bilba, but a forefather advised a raja ca. middle 19th century to do something, which would make hs rule more longer. Then he adopted that wandering Bilba chief as son. From time to time that new branch also deliverd rajas. The original dynasty is the Giri dynasty. Now the Giri- and the Lenggu branch deliver each a representative for the royal symbol.
Both branches are now ruling a part of OEnale. He himself did that from 1966-1984. Of course each has a dream to be Raja of total OEnale. Before OEnale also had the Dehla area under it’s rule, but that area under a Fettor (vice-Raja) separated from OEnale.
