The Surf

Surf Camp

Surfers are taken daily by boat to the most suitable break according to their level and swell conditions.
Surf Spots
Although waves at G-Land are suitable for all levels, the accomplish surfer will find here deep barrels with perfect walls reeling down this endless point and score some of the longest rides of their life. These stunning breaks were the stage for the ASP World Championship three years in a row.
G-Land is arguably one of the world’s best left-hander, reputed for its established offshore trade winds. From March to November, the Indian Ocean generates strong swells, providing G-Land with one of the world’s most consistent breaks. There are 7 breaks in G-Land and the 3 most famous ones are Kong, Money Trees and Speedies.

The comfortable surf resort for the world famous Ombak Tujuh surfing destination on the Indian Ocean, just 3 hours outside Jakarta The hotel is located some 8 km. west of the fishing village called Pelabuhan Ratu, just past the Sumudra Beach Hotel. The 1.2-hectare site is on the right side of the road & rises steeply, giving views to the Indian Ocean, also to the Cimaja and Indicator Point surf breaks. Because of this steep rise the hotel receives good sea breezes, making it cool & comfortable The gardens are extensive and provide the following outdoor facilities: swimming pool and spa bath, tennis court, children’s play ground, BBQ’s & secure car parking. The 1.2-hectare site is on the right side of the road & rises steeply, giving views to the Indian Ocean, also to the Cimaja and Indicator Point surf breaks. The village of Pelabuhan Ratu is some 150-km directly south of Jakarta & it takes some 3-4 hours to travel there, by car from the airport. If you go by train, bus and finally bemo, it will take you about six to seven hours. The Pelabuhan Ratu Bay faces the Indian Ocean with a southwesterly aspect & is appox. 45 km wide & 60+ km long. Accommodation Our spacious villas are fully equipped with kitchen, Lounge and Dining-room. Our resort facilities include a freeshape swimming pool, a regulation tennis court and BBQ’s. Our surf-shop and pub Ombak Tujuh is open 7 days per week. There is a standby generator and we have internet access. Ombak Tujuh is how our area is known in the surfing community and it is famous for a number of spectacular surfing spots. 3 Villa’s 2 + 3, these consist of 3 bedrooms (double beds), 2 bathrooms, lounge, kitchen (complete with refrigerator & cooking/eating utensils) & dinning areas, which open out on to balconies & gardens. These are suitable for 6 – 8 guests; (one B/R has a bunk bed for children). Gas mains pressure hot water & ceiling fans also are provided. $120 aud per night includes local taxes Bungalows 1,2,3,4,5 & 10, are self-contained bedrooms, with double bed & private bathrooms attached. These bungalows are suitable for couples, with the internal sitting area, opening out on to balconies, with access to a service kitchen. Gas mains pressure hot water & ceiling fans also are provided $45 AUD per night includes local taxes The Surf The dry season is the main surfing season & is approximately from April through to October. Most days have clear skies, with a temperature range of 25 to 37 deg. C; nights now are cooler & pleasant sea breezes. The on shore wind normally starts about 11 am. & drops of most afternoons 4 p.m. So both morning & afternoon surfing sessions are possible. The wet season is from November through to March, while the surf is less reliable, there are still waves to be had. WAVES – the typical swell direction is southerly, it is large & good waves are to be had all around the bay. Cimaja river, which is located 60 – 100 mts, to the east of the normal take off point, the 6 – 8 ft. swell is providing good waves, with good barrels, with a possibility for long rides, 150 + mts. The waves in this part of West Java are really under-rated. Indo Surfer magazines like “Surf Time” have been starting safaris with photographers and pro-surfers in this area recently. There are waves here that are some of the best in Indonesia, and like any place else it’s just timing. The best-known surf spot in the region is CIMAJA. This is because most other surf breaks locations, have limited accommodation, in general surfers use Cimaja as their base, during their stay in the region, hiring “Bis Angot”s (the blue bus’ whom some call a “Bemo’) for day trips to other spots. The Cimaja village is about 1 km from the SAMUDRA BEACH Hotel There are some surf shops & board repairing facilities in the Cimaja area, but these are limited. Yes you will get leg ropes & wax, but not “fin keys” or “ding repair kits”, sunscreens are all imported, so most shops can not now afford to carry them, so bring sufficient for you holiday. Figure out what size surf you really want to ride and bring the right equipment. My surf quiver ranged from 6’6″, 7’0″, 7’6″, & 8’0″ and I used every one of them regularly depending where I surfed. You may think you can surf big waves with a small board, but really you’re only fooling yourself. You want to surf big fast waves bring that gun because you won’t regret it when you’re surfing and everyone is watching. Travelers should bring a small first aid kit that contains the following items, 1/ anti diarrhea tablets, 2/ pain – fever relief tablets, 3/ malarial tablets, 4/ small dressings for cuts etc. 5/ hydrogen peroxide at 3 – 5% concentration is a good fluid for cleaning wounds or coral cuts, 6/ a soft tooth brush with HO/2 is better for getting the spikes of sea urchins out of your feet, 7/ some “wet” & “dry” antiseptic dressings & medicine. The use of reverse charge phone cards & or by operator connection, has almost completely disappeared with the collapse of the Rupiah , so be prepared to spend lots of money at the “Wartel” (shop telephone) to call home or your friends. The use of email is becoming more widely available, so look for hotels etc. This package of information has been provided, in the interests of answering queries from prospective travelers to the Indonesian Island of Java, notably West Java (Sunda Province).

Istana Ombak is a like Nirvana for surfers. A mystical bay with a hollow left one side and a hollow right on the other. Intrepid surfers have been exploring this region for a short while but only those with a knack for the language and intimate knowledge of breaks have found success. East Java Wave Palace offers a chilled out surf trip with world class surf on the doorstep.

Resort manager Rod Steeles refers to this dreamlike bay as Istanaombak translating to Wave Palace in Indonesian. An idyllic bay with palm trees to the shoreline and tall cliffs. A left flanks one side of the bay and a right the other, with a channel separating the two. A perfect bay barrelling down both sides; god couldn’t have designed it better. Placing an emphasis on sustainability and minimising their carbon foot print East Java Wave Palace ensures your visit will be relaxing, surf filled, unforgettable and environmentally minimal.

The resort is a collaborative project between the Indonesian Government, Javanese locals, Australian and Indonesian surfers. The resort provides the locals in the area with a new ecologically sustainable industry with economic benefits to the community. The resort is built to western standards and you certainly won’t be roughing it.

This area of Java is unlike the Indonesia you may have previously experienced. No hawkers, no nightclubs and best of all NO CROWDS! Just a total escape from the hustle and bustle of Western society with incredible surf, friendly locals and pristine environment and no mosquitos!

Accommodation is super comfortable in well appointed bungalows with private facilities. As you can see in the photos no expense has been spared in the construction of Wave Palace Eco Resort. All materials used are high quality and timber used is 100% local. The resort is undergoing constant improvements and early in the 2012 will see the completion of the new Infinity swimming pool which will be the ultimate place to chill in between surfs. Rod has created a piece of paradise that you will not want to leave and you will vow to return to. Those already lucky enough to stay at Wave Palace have been blown away by this incredible location.

Istanaombak the ‘wave palace’ is a bay with a left on one side and right on the other.both work at a bunch of tides and sizes. This bay is located in central Java and faces South and catchs any kind of swell. From the most west south west swell to the rare south east swell, and loads of it.
Best time of the year is the dry season May through October. But even through the wet season there is plenty of swell just the winds tend to be more variable and the trade offshore’s of the dry season aren’t as common.

Batu Karas offers fun, user-friendly waves but please keep in mind it doesn’t have the consistency of other Indo surf spots. If you’re looking for G-land style barrels or Mentawai-like perfection Batu Karas probably won’t suit what you’re after. THE POINT at Batu Karas Righthand pointbreak that rolls through a sand bottom bay in front of the hotel for up to 400 metres. The takeoff is up to you: fast and hollow beyond the point, or slow and easy at the shoulder section. After takeoff the wave mellows out with workable walls through to the far end of Batu Karas bay. THE REEF at Batu Karas Righthander with an easy takeoff that leads into fast walls unraveling over a lava reef. This high tide spot can turn on some real quality with clean walls to work on your top/bottom turn combo and down-the-line speed reeling to the beach for around 150 metres. Breaks from waist high to overhead. OTHER OPTIONS There’s other surf options accessible by car or boat if you’re up for a bit of adventure. Plenty of beachbreaks nearby, and 40 mins drive from Batu karas is a lefthand barrelly reefbreak that works on small swells and is offshore with the SE tradewinds from June-Sept.
