General
Ruteng Recreation Park is a 32,000 ha. protection site, south of Ruteng. The
area is mountainous, with seven volcanic peaks, and covered by mixed evergreen
and semi-deciduous hill forest and mountain cloud forests. The active volcano
Gunung Ranaka (2,400 m.) is the second highest peak on Flores.
The site's main attraction is formed by its rich avifauna. All mountain
species of Flores can be seen in the area. Waterbirds occur at the Danau Rana
Mese crater lake, located at an altitude of 1,200 m., west of Ruteng.
Access
Ruteng is served by buses from Labuanbajo (4-5 hrs.), Bajawa (4-5 hrs.) and
Ende (9 hrs.). You can access the park by several routes. Before you go get
